About the Content Blockchain Project

 

Summary

Publishing and content based businesses are facing many challenges:

  • The growing centralization of the internet
  • Missing interoperability-standards
  • Few possibilities to monetize content (mostly ads only)
  • Legal obstacles (country specific copyright and license laws)

The Content Blockchain will launch as an open source blockchain network tailored to the specific needs of the wider content and media ecosystem by building a decentralized solution to these problems:

  • High capacity, low cost digital payments, tipping and funding (micro-payments)
  • Scalable and standardized content identification and metadata publishing (discoverability)
  • Blockchain based, standardized and machine-readable Smart Licenses (automation)
  • Community tokens (custom native assets)
  • Open participation for end users and application developers
  • Community based on-chain governance and chain upgradability

The Content Blockchain is building the foundational tools and the infrastructure for a new blockchain based content ecosystem.

The Project

The Content Blockchain Project was initiated in 2016 by a consortium of publishing, law and IT companies to research the possibilities of using blockchain technologies to advance the content and media ecosystem. In 2016, the project has received an initial funding from Google’s Digital News Initiative to do research and development on the opportunities of blockchain technology for the media industry.

The Content Blockchain Project itself is run as an open non-profit initiative and is building foundational technologies for the media ecosystem. Our goal is to create a decentralized, global, digital infrastructure for the creative community to discover, register, navigate, offer, sell and license digital media content and otherwise exchange value over the network.

All project results and achievements are documented and available as open source code that can be used for any kind of commercial and non-commercial purposes. The project is also open for contributions from interested parties. Thus by design, the Content Blockchain network is open for anyone to create and develop all kinds of new and innovative applications and tools that can connect to the distributed ledger.

Key Innovations

The ISCC is a modern algorithmic content identifier for multiple media formats (text, image, audio, video). It is designed to work as a generic cross-sector standard (news journalism, book and academic publishing, music industry, etc.) that supports advanced machine learning applications. The ISCC allows publishers and creators to independently generate content identifiers from metadata and the content itself.

Smart Licenses are machine readable license information on the blockchain, inseparably connected to the content. Smart License Templates can serve any individual business case and will simplify license transactions and trade on the blockchain.

The Content Blockchain is the first public blockchain platform with built-in governance tailored to the requirements of the content industry and built for the benefit of the media and content ecosystem.
